Although Robert Wienes' The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari first came out in 1920, a new version of the silent film classic had its world premiere on the 14th of January 2004 at the Cinema Paradiso in St Pölten Austria. Franz Danksagmüller—classical musician, composer, and organist for the cathedral of St. Pölten—composed a new sound track and performed it live with the film. Danksagmüller's composition, played live from his Kyma workstation, had the audience alternately laughing and shivering. He used a keyboard to trigger strange voices, footsteps, heavy breathing, and other sound effects. And he played sliding pitches on a Mixturtrautronium (the instrument made popular by Oscar Sala on Hitchock's The Birds).
