Hi,

Thought I'd announce some upcoming shows which will feature performances by myself with Kyma (after a mere 8 weeks or so with it). The first show is at a club tonight in LA (short notice I know), and then there is one this coming Sunday, also in LA (at a CalArts alumni festival in Los Feliz). I'm pasting the somewhat grandiose press release for these shows below. These shows feature electronic musician-improviser Earl Howard (from NYC) and my group Sonu (from LA/San Diego).

Also upcoming, Earl Howard and Sonu have a show at Merkin Concert Hall in NYC on Nov. 10, as a part of Tom Buckner's Interpretations concert series.

On Nov. 18 I am back in LA to perform as part of an ensemble with Wadada Leo Smith at the REDCAT theater in his Creative Music Festival (note that I am listed on the wrong day on the website)

If anyone comes to any of these shows, please say hello. But don't expect a demonstration of Kyma mastery - I'm still figuring it all out...

Here's the press release for the shows this week, which I'm including for the logistical info and so that you can peruse our bios (since I haven't really introduced myself here):

L.A. born/New York City based composer/improviser Earl Howard and the Southern California based electro-acoustic improvisational quartet, soNu, will both be making rare L.A. appearances this fall, performing a joint concert on Monday, October 10, 2005 at 8:30 p.m. as part of the Ear Orchard Mondays series at Club Tropical in Culver City, and again during the October 15-16 celebration Half Hour From Home: CalArts Alumni at Barnsdall (date and time to be determined). Howard will be in Southern California for a creative residency, working with soNu on a new composition that will be premiered on November 10 in the "Interpretations" concert series at Merkin Concert Hall in New York City,

soNu, described by Anthony Braxton as producing "the music of the Third Millennium," has collaborated and performed with an impressive group of figures from the world of post-free improvisational music, including performer/composers Anthony Braxton, Anthony Davis, Mark Dresser, Lisle Ellis, Vinny Golia, George Lewis, and Wadada Leo Smith. soNu is committed to extending the music exemplified by these musicians and thinkers by critically (re)examining and (re)conceptualizing improvisational forms and means, with an eye toward the socio-cultural context of contemporary communities. The quartet has been featured at such music festivals as Olavsfestdagene Festival (Trondheim, Norway), Copenhagen Jazz Festival (Denmark), Crossdrumming International Percussion Festival (Warsaw, Poland), The American Composer's Orchestra Improvise! festival (New York City), University of California, Riverside’s International Improvisation Festival, and Powering Up/Powering Down, an International Festival of Technology in the Arts at
UC San Diego.

Earl Howard has been performing his compositions in the United States and Europe for the past thirty years. His recent compositions include music for live electronics, electronic tape music as well as music for electronics and instruments. Earl Howard's method of creating orchestrated sounds with electronics and adding live, improvisational performance creates a unique, densely layered composition that has been performed to enthusiastic audiences at Merkin Hall, the Whitney Museum, The Kitchen, Roulette, and Carnegie Recital Hall. His works have been performed and recorded by a number of musicians including Anthony Davis' recording of Particle W, for piano and tape and Gerry Hemingway's recording of D.R. for solo percussion. Mr. Howard is also a virtuoso saxophonist and has developed an extended repertoire for the instrument. He has received Composer fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the New York Foundation on the Arts. He has produced numerous soundtracks for some of the leading film and video artists including Nam June Paik, Mary Lucier, Rii Kanzaki, Bob Harris, and Bill Brand.

soNu is:
Gustavo Aguilar
Nina Eidsheim
Phil Curtis
