Problem

When I plug in the power supply to my Paca(rana), I hear a high frequency noise coming from the power brick. It goes away when I turn on the Paca(rana).

Solution

When the power supply is plugged in but the Paca(rana) is not switched on, the power supply enters its Energy Star mode where it tries to save energy by switching on and off. You are hearing the modulation as an approximately 8 kHz band of noise centered around 14.5 kHz. It can sound like a very soft very high frequency hiss or like a little tiny motor sound. The sound goes away once the Paca(rana) is switched on.

The solution is to either leave the Paca(rana) on all the time or to plug the power supply into a power strip so you can turn it completely off when not in use. Either of these actions prevents the power supply from entering power-saving mode and thus prevents the noise. Alternatively, if you place the power brick on the floor far enough away from where you are working, the noise will be attenuated by the distance or the table or desk such that you will no longer hear it (the sound is very low amplitude).
